Musk deer are small-sized deer without antlers. The distinctive body construction restricts the movement style of the animals: they walk or jump, and never run. Physical features: - t has large ears, a very short tail, no antlers, and, unlike all other deer, a gallbladder. The musk deer is grayish brown, with long coarse brittle hair, and stands 50–60 cm (20–24 inches) at the shoulder, slightly higher at the rump. Musk deer have many fragrant glands. Habitat: - Confined to the Old World: eastern Asia from the limits of forested zone at 70°N to Myanmar and Himalayas both males and females have well-developed upper canines. Himalayan musk deer is native species of Nepal, belongs to order- Cetartiodactyla of family-Moschidae. Behaviour: - During the day, white-bellied musk deer hide in dense cover and are shy and secretive. At night, they emerge to feed in more open habitats, and preferably select leaves of trees and shrubs with high protein and low fibre contents. During the winter, they subsist on poorer quality lichens, and even climb small trees to feed upon leaves. Musk deer are herbivores, living in hilly, forested environments, generally far from human habitation. They are solitary animals, and maintain well-defined territories.
